April Newsletter 2017

NH THAT’S ME – Corne Serfontein

We are fortunate to look back on a great summer season, and as winter approaches, there is still a lot to look forward to this year. One thing we’re excited about is being in the running again for the Lilizela Tourism Awards and  Sanlam Top Destination Award – thanks to all our guests, we won the awards last year, and we are confident that, with their continued support, we will do the same this year!

My hospitality career started just after I left school, at the Tsitsikamma Village Inn Hotel on the Garden Route, working first as waiter and barman (while my friends were enjoying the fun of Plett Rage!), and later as restaurant and bar supervisor. During my two years at the Village Inn, I learned more about hospitality than I did during five years of taking the subject at school! I learned how to read people and how fun it is to get to know different people from all around the world, every day.

When the time came for a change, I decided that a move to Cape Town would be best for my career. I applied to the training programme at NH The Lord Charles Hotel and joined the team in 2011 as management trainee. The rest, as they say, is history, and I’ve never regretted that decision for a moment!

After completing the 18-month training programme, I was introduced to the various departments within the Hotel, and since 2013 I’ve moved up the ranks from receptionist to shift leader to front office manager. My career at the hotel has been nothing less than amazing! Over the years I’ve met incredible guests and formed great relationships. And working with a great team makes it all even more worthwhile.

Here’s looking forward to making your next stay a memorable one – and to winning some awards while we’re at it!

Best regards,

Corné Serfontein – Front Office Manager

2017 Cape Legends & Artisan Spirits Inter Hotel Challenge

The 2017 Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge was officially launched on Saturday, 25 March, in the Garden Terrace, at a lunch featuring a delectable four-course alternating menu prepared by some of Cape Town’s finest executive chefs.

NH The Lord Charles will be partnering with Allesverloren Wines and Van Ryn’s Brandy in the 2017 Challenge. Our candidates are Gizelle Els (Chef, last year’s runner-up) and Michelle Swart (Wine Steward). We wish them all the best with their preparation for the competition in June!

Community Outreach

During April, we were privileged to be able to give something back to the community by partnering with three organizations that work to improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged children. Hotel staff joined the Imibala Home for a Soccer Day at Hottentots-Holland High School, visited Cotlands Baby Sanctuary, and accompanied Reach for a Dream on a visit to the Children’s Ward at Tygerberg Hospital and  handed out delicious Easter Eggs – hand made by our pastry Kitchen.  The delight in those childrens’ eyes was worth every minute.

Oude Molen Distillery – Indulge your sense of the Extraordinary!!

The story of Oude Molen brandy in South Africa began in the early 1900s, with the ‘father’ of SA brandy, René Santhagens. It is a story that continues today, in the care and craft that we put into making our luxurious and award-winning brandies. Modern in appearance, with a legacy steeped in South African brandy history, the quietly unassuming Oude Molen Distillery will leave you with new perspectives and an unrivaled sense of peace.

Recipe of Month

Cape Malay cuisine may have its roots in the sad history of slavery at the Cape, but this aromatic, creative, and often social style of cooking has become one of Cape Town’s proudest cultural exports. Traditionally served at Easter, pickled fish (kerrievis) is delicious as a snack with bread and butter, or as a main with a potato salad and accompanied by some dressed lettuce leaves.
