So at last we can reflect on some decent rain and a properly wintery feel of the last month, and that is wonderful news for our water scarce region. Things at the hotel, however, show absolutely no signs of cooling down and our occupancies and events are continuing to grow and grow. The month of June does typically see things quieten down somewhat, but my team and I have been hard at work to ensure that the offerings here at NH The Lord Charles continue to attract customers to the hotel year round. We have said farewell this month to one of our senior management team members, Jaco du Plooy who, after 10 years of exemplary service to the hotel, will be joining another hotel in the city of Cape Town. I know that the entire staff and guests alike will join me in wishing Jaco all of the best with his new role and in thanking him for his enormous contribution to the business over the past decade.
On the 12th of May this year we were privileged to host the CEO of the JSE Nicky Newton-King who addressed guests at our Charity Business Breakfast and I am pleased to report that it was a resounding success and a sizeable amount of money was raised to support the work done by the Masikhule organisation. Thank you to all who attended to make this such a successful event and an enormous thank you to the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club for the initiative. As always, my welcome wouldn’t be complete without the reminder about our progress in a variety of industry-leading competitions. Voting is still open on the Sanlam Top Destination awards and please do lend us your support there. We are now anxiously awaiting the results of the Lilizela Tourism Awards as the voting there closed on the 19th of June. Finally, the World Luxury Hotel Awards have pushed the opening of voting to early July, so please do go along there and cast your vote.

As mentioned above, the entries and votes for the Lilizela Tourism Awards are now closed. We are anxiously awaiting the results from this prestigious local award. NH The Lord Charles is entered into the “Service Excellence” category and we are confident that we delivery a product worthy of an award. Being a customer driven award process, we have relied heavily on the support of our loyal guests and patrons and all early indications are that we got some fantastic support in the voting process.
The Lilizela Awards for service excellence not only celebrate local hotels in the accommodation category, but also look to reward the exceptional visitor experiences, the efforts of local tour operators and the craft of the local tour guides too. As the name implies, the World Luxury Hotel Awards, celebrate the success stories and achievers in the international luxury hotel arena. We are proud to be a part of this global awards initiative and are but one of over 2000 entrants. Not all of the entrants are vying for the same category of award, of which there are in excess of 60, but we are thrilled to have our hotel profile listed amongst some 800 hotels across the world. In keeping with the nature of the awards and the industry they celebrate, this year’s glitzy 10th anniversary award ceremony will be held at the palatial St Regis hotel in Doha and we really would love to be one of the lucky recipients of an award. ENJOY UEFA EURO 2016 AT ST ANDREWS BAR– 10TH OF JUNE TO THE 10TH OF JULY
From June, 10th we saw the culmination of the European football gathering in the Euro 2016 tournament. To celebrate this event we are hosting all the games live on the screens in the St Andrews Bar at NH The Lord Charles Hotel. To go with the games, we have prepared a special Euro 2016 menu with great pub food and specials, so why not join us for a bit of winter fun in the pub?

Streetsmart SA collaborates with La Vigna
Next month from 04 – 09 July 2016, see our Inter Hotel Competition candidates, Gizelle Els and Michelle Swart showcase their competition menu in our signature restaurant, La Vigna, paired with the wines that were presented to the judges on the 15th of June 2016 at the International Hotel School in Cape Town, CBD.
Gizelle and Michelle’s results will be announced at a Gala Dinner event on the 29th of July 2016. We are collaborating with Streetsmart SA, which is a NPO that reintegrates street children off the streets of Cape Town, back into society by providing shelters and helping children to finish their formal schooling. Streetsmart has a program and initiative that sees patrons dining at participating restaurants donate to this hardworking organisation. Our Sunday lunch buffet service offers a vast selection of hearty treats, including delicious soups and of course the now legendary carvery. WHO IS MASIKHULE
As Daniel mentioned in his welcome above, the charity breakfast event went an enormously large way to helping fill the coffers of the Masikhule organisation, and here is just a little bit of information as to why this contribution has such an impact on so many lives. The name “Masikuhle” means “let it grow” in isiXhosa and growth is exactly what inspires this organisation – the growth of communities through education and training. Masikuhle trains daycare and pre-school teachers and unemployed women from disadvantaged communities in ECD, providing essential skills that enable them to effectively educate and nurture pre-school children in their communities, and provide employment opportunities. The monies raised will go an enormous way to ensuring that this non-profit organisation is able to continue to do the wonderfull work that it does in making a really great impact and positive contribution to the Helderberg basin community. Of course, this fundraising initiative would not have been possible without the wonderful team from the Helderberg Sunrise Rotary http://www.hsrotary.co.za .
RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Our recipe this month is a simple, but wonderfully delicious and indulgent Portobello Mushroom butter. A Portobello mushroom is simply the mature version of the common or button mushroom, originally native to the grasslands of Euope and North America, but now cultivated with great success all over the world and just down the road in Stellenbosch too. This mushroom butter can be whipped up in no time at all and is a fabulous substitute for regular butter and spreads to enjoy with your breads and pastires.Full recipe
