WINE & DINE
Swartland-LogoFriday, the 24th of June 2016,  the hotel is once again playing host to one of our many wonderful wineries of the Western Cape and this month is the turn of the team from the Swartland Winery.  The Swartland Winery is situated just outside the agricultural town of Malmesbury and is currently riding the crest of a wave of renewed interest in the area as a region of distinction in South African wine production.  The Swartland gets its name from the now all but vanished Renosterveld that used to proliferate here and gave the area a black appearance from afar.  Today the golden fields of maize abound, but the agricultural reputation in the area is now being superbly enhanced by expert wine production.  The Swartland Winery continues to play an integral part in this resurgence and we are thrilled to have them showcase some of their wines on the night.

CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE FOR 2016 – TRIPADVISOR

Over the last few months we have been encouraging all our guests and friends to look us up on the Trip Advisor website and rate their experiences with us.  With that, we are thrilled to announce that NH Cape Town The Lord Charles has been selected for the 2016 Certificate of Excellence, reflecting the consistently great reviews we have earned on TripAdvisor. We are also very proud to report that the website designed to allow fellow travellers to honestly and objectively rank their hospitality experience continues to hold us in the number 1 position for hotels in our area.  As Mike from Durban did after visiting our hotel last month, he said that the location was great. Hotel with staff and service was awesome. Would definitely stay there again. The breakfast was nice with a good selection of food. Happy hour at the St Andrews was a fun experience.  Another positive review was submitted by Kaylin from Cape Town who enthused about the revamped La Vigna restaurant saying that “the food was sublime and service was amazing. It was a really enjoyable stay. Chef Shane and Giselle at the La Vigna Restaurant, where dinner is served for hotel guests, really know their stuff and will definitely get your taste buds dancing. If you’re looking for fine dining look no further”.

TIME TO CELEBRATE DAD

Food_41One of the highlights of our winter calendar is the Father’s Day Sunday Lunch in our Garden Terrace restaurant.  Every year in June we relish the opportunity to celebrate our fathers and spoil them for an afternoon of good food, good wine and good company.  So why not join us this year and be a part of the thank you to the dad’s of South Africa and beyond.   This year we are offering a buffet lunch where dad can relax and enjoy a hearty meal with his friends and family.  Partnered with the delicious buffet, dad can expect live background music to help him unwind and a delicious welcome drink as our way of saying “thanks dad”.   As with the monthly wine and dine events, we invite you to book for this event with Denise Reddell on 021 855 1040 or email Denise at d.reddell@nh-hotels.co.za.  The cost for the lunch is R295 for adults and R145 for children aged 4 – 11 years old.

THE CAPE LEGENDS INTER HOTEL CHALLENGE

ar_051In the past month, our head chef, Jean Pierre Lenferna De la Motte, introduced his team for the Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge.  The event took place at The Arabella Hotel & Spa, near Kleimond and saw the kitchen maestros from NH The Lord Charles, Arabella Hotel & Spa and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, in collaboration with one another, producing a spectacular three course fine dining lunch.  At the event were guest speakers from various social and community upliftment groups such as Melanie Burke from The Street Smart Foundation, an initiative in upliftment of street children in South Africa.  Julie Cheetham from  The Grootbos Foundation who spoke on  various social upliftment projects of Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.  Dr Vash Mungal-Singh from Heart & Stroke Foundation South Africa, who had a very motivating and enlightening talk about the importance of following healthy lifestyle and eating habits of South Africans.  Marieta Human from SA Pork, also spoke about the growth of the pork industry in South Africa and the benefits of cooking with more pork.   The culmination of the competition will see the regional winners “Cook Off” against each other and the wine stewards going head to head to present their assigned Wine Estate’s Premium selected wines from across the Stellensbosch  wine region.

The winning Chef and wine steward will be crowned at a glitzy award ceremony. Candidate Chefs to present a well-balanced three-course menu, which will include the use of Lancewood, Rio Largo Olive Oil and Khoisan Sea Salt, with the main course using versatile pork at a total cost of R200 per head.  Over and above this, the chefs and wine stewards are required to pair the courses with the appropriate wines and present the food expertly and creatively – so quite a tall order.  Michelle Swart and Gizelle Els, our selected wine steward and  candidate chef, will be presenting premium wines form Plaisir de Merle and Black Bottle Scotch Whiskey, a premium lable spirit paired with their creative menu.  We would like to take this opportunity to wish our chef and his support team all of the very best for the “Cook Off”, and as we are certain all those who have already eaten at the hotel can attest, you are already winners!

We are very proud to announce a collaborative initiative between our La Vigna Restaurant and the Street Smart Foundation running from the 4th to the 8th of July 2016.  Two of our proud trainees (Michelle Swart and Gizelle Els)  will be part of this wonderful opportunity to give back to our community.   The initiative sees a minimum R5 donation being made by everyone who orders the special menu dedicated to this initiative. “I am very grateful for the opportunities to grow in the industry and Gizelle and I are very proud to be part of this amazing initiative” says Michelle Swart.   The money raised will be used to help support the wonderful work done by the non profit organisation Street Smart Foundation who provide much needed aid to those vulnerable persons not fortunate enough to find themselves in a home.  As winter begins to bite, we encourage you to join with us in helping those in need and give just that little something to make a very big difference.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

20150202-stuffed-pasta-vicky-wasik-18-thumb-625xauto-418887What with all the talk of the efforts from our head chef in the Cape Legends competition, it is a wonder that Jean Pierre finds time for much else, given our busy kitchens here at the hotel.  True to his word though and further evidence to his commitment and passion for all things gastronomic, he has once again found the time and produced another recipe for this month’s delectable treat.  The recipe is easy enough for even a novice chef to master and as some time is required to get the lamb just right, it is also the perfect way to spend a productive morning in the kitchen.  To help you sculpt your pasta properly, it is interesting to note that in the Emilia region of Italy from where this pasta dish emanated, it is also referred to as “ombellico” pasta due to its shape resembling a belly button.  For the full recipe CLICK HERE.
