Twitter Blanket Drive

The Twitter Blanket Drive is back and bigger than ever before and the Helderberg Basin is getting involved!

The 7th of April 2016, marked the official launch of #TBD2016, and we’re very excited and proud to announce that the Helderberg basin has decided to participate and throw their weight behind the cause again this year.

For the past seven years, South Africa’s Twitter community has united to help donate thousands of warm blankets for the poor just in time for winter. And judging by the early signs, it’s going to be a cold one this year.

“With winter around the corner, we know that charities struggle to try and meet the demand for blankets for the underprivileged. But in today’s digital world, we have the power to make that change’’ says #TBD2016’s national co-ordinator and Cape Town host; Merentia van der Vent.

This year has seen smaller towns participating in the Twitter Blanket Drive by hosting smaller events in order to collect as many blankets as possible before the finale event on May 26 2016 where the blankets will be counted and handed over to the selected NPO’s.

We are proud to announce that the Helderberg area is being hosted by Stephanie Young.  Stephanie isn’t new to our cause, having hosted the drive in Pretoria in 2015 and is overseeing the 5 drop off points for the Helderberg Basin this year.  These areas include: Gordons Bay, Strand, Somerset West and Stellenbosch.

The first of their exciting events is happening this Saturday, 23 April 2016 at the Lord Charles Hotel, corner of Main and R44, Somerset West where the Pow-Wow Yoga Studio is hosting a free yoga session in exchange for a new or lightly used blanket. The event starts at 8:15 and weather permitting, we are expecting the Lord Charles grounds to be filled with fun and peaceful sounds of a yoga session designed for the whole family.

We thank Stephanie from Trésors Studio, Nadine Heasman and Ryan Edmonds from Pow-Wow Yoga Studio and The Lord Charles management team for showing their enthusiastic support for the Twitter Blanket Drive.

If you are unable to attend the event on Saturday, here are your drop-off locations:

  • Lord Charles Hotel, Somerset West  [23 April ONLY]
  • Pow-Wow Yoga Studio  [21 April ONLY] – Centre 89, Andries Pretorius Street, Somerset West
  • The Bayside Christian Family Church, Fabriek Street, Strand between 09:00 and 16:30 work days.
  • Helderberg Street People’s Centre “Busy Corner” – 71 Church Street, Somerset West
  • Delvera Wine Farm – R44 Stellenbosch,

Please join us this year in spreading the word of our campaign, run purely by people looking to make a positive change in South Africa. If you live in the Helderberg area and want to assist please contact Stephanie Young on 071 500 4856 or or tweet her @TresorsStudio on Twitter.

The finale is being hosted by Protea’s Fire & Ice Hotel and will act as the main “drop-off zone’’ for anyone interested in donating blankets up until the final event on Thursday the 26th of May. Donors and Capetonians may then join us to count all the blankets, while enjoying the sounds of some local artists.

NH The Lord Charles has 198 beautifully appointed guestrooms and houses one of the largest conference centres in the Western Cape, with a range of venues to suit a variety of events or meetings. Set between the spectacular mountains and vineyards of the Cape Winelands and white sandy beaches of False Bay, the hotel is conveniently situated only 20 minutes’ drive from Cape Town International Airport and 30 minutes’ drive from the Cape Town CBD.

Brilliant Basics

The remodelling of the guestrooms is in line with NH’s Brilliant Basics service offering, which promises guests understated yet perfect comfort and convenience based on four simple, yet fundamental features of their stay at the hotel: a perfect night’s rest, soothing rain effect showers, NH’s excellent breakfast, and free and easy WiFi anywhere in the hotel.  Upgrades to the rooms include a new-look, minimalist decorative theme, furniture and artwork, new beds, 42-inch smart televisions and mini fridges, while the en suite bathrooms have been fitted with rain effect showers and new makeup mirrors.

Teleconferencing, PowerPoint presentations and high impact audio and video presentations are the norm at NH The Lord Charles. We have numerous corporate clients who make use of our services on a regular basis because of the value-adding personal touch that we bring to all their requirements.

Corporate & Retail Construction

Work on the extensive refurbishment programme started in June and was completed in stages. CRC offers clients a full turnkey service, from the inception and planning stages to the completion of any project. Clients include the V&A Waterfront, Clicks Group and Edcon.

According to Jaco du Plooy, Sales, Marketing and Revenue Manger at NH Hotels South Africa, every effort was made to ensure that guests were not inconvenienced during the renovation work and the project unfolded with minimum disruption to the normal functioning of the hotel. Du Plooy added that the hotel management is very happy with the end result: “We are absolutely thrilled with the new look of the hotel and we cannot wait to showcase the brand new NH The Lord Charles Hotel to our valued clients and guests.”

Who are we? Distance For Difference

Distance For Difference (D4D) has been making a difference in the lives of children since 2005 and are celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2015. We use sport to raise money for children’s charities and individual children in need. For more information, please join us on Facebook at visit our website at Email us at or call us on 021 852 7081.
What are we doing? CHARITY FUND RAISING
This event was successfully held for the 1st time in 2013. In this second installment, a small group of 20 cyclists will again stretch themselves to the (mostly unknown) limit of their abilities to cycle 500 km in 24 hours with short breaks every two hours. Additional riders will have the opportunity of each riding one or more laps with the initial group of 20 cyclists to contribute towards the fundraising efforts of the event and help us achieve our goal of raising R500,000.

During the same 24 hours, a spinning bike marathon will be held at NH The Lord Charles Hotel. Companies are invited to book one or more spinning bikes for this unique team building opportunity! (Event marketing video: This challenge will be a tough one, but the difference it will make, will be worth it. The event will start outside NH The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on 17 October 2015 at 11h00 and will end 24 hours later. There will be media updates before, after and during the event. Sponsors can show their support in person at the start / finish and after each cycle lap, additionally, the event can be followed on the D4D Facebook account, (see above), which will be updated regularly.

The progress of the cyclists will be tracked through an interactive internet map, via tracking units carried by the riders. Join us for a cup of coffee and something to eat at the events own coffee shop. The first two quarter finals of the 2015 IRB Rugby World Cup will also be projected on big screens at the event!

Why are we doing it? PATCH HELDERBERG & OTHERS

Through this event, D4D will once again attempt to raise R500,000, half of which will go to the event’s main beneficiary, PATCH / Helderberg Child Abuse Centre. PATCH provides child survivors of sexual abuse with 24 hr. crisis intervention, free professional therapy, court preparation, as well as providing prevention and awareness programmes in surrounding schools within the Helderberg area of Cape Town.

This event will provide more than 80 children with the treatment and support they so desperately need. To find out more, call Patch on 021 852 6110, email them at or visit their website, The remaining half of the funds raised will go to several current (and new) children’s charities who are dependent on D4D funds for their continued work. Most importantly: We take on this challenge with the words of Phil. 4:13 as our foundation and to glorify our Heavenly Father through everything we do.
